Mehmet Kubaşık was shot on 4 April 2006 in front of his kiosk in Dortmund. The 39-year-old father of three children was a Kurd and belonged to the Alevi religious minority. For this reason, he fled to Germany from Turkey together with his wife and daughter in 1991. The family gained German citizenship in 2003.
