The far-right Nationalsozialistischer Untergrund (“National Socialist Underground”, NSU) committed three bombings. On 23 June 1999, a pipe bomb exploded in a pub in Nuremberg. The leaseholder, originally from Turkey, was seriously injured in the attack.
Two years later, on 19 January 2001, a black-powder bomb was detonated in a grocer’s shop in Cologne. The German-Iranian daughter of the owner was seriously injured as a result.
The most massive attack took place on 9 June 2004 on Keupstraße in Cologne, the location of many Turkish shops. More than 20 people were injured, some of whom seriously, when a nail bomb exploded.
